About the Ramadan Appeal

Urgent support for Gaza

Since the 7th of October 2023, after an attack by Hamas in Israel which led to the death of civilians and hostages being taken, the Israeli authorities retaliated with a terrifying and indiscriminate assault and airstrikes on the people of Palestine with the Gaza strip being the main target. The Gaza Health Ministry reports that the Gaza death toll has now hit more than 30,000 people and 1.9 million Gazans have been displaced from their homes. The majority of people in Gaza are now living in camps, homeless or in shelters. Malnutrition and food insecurity is high, disease is rife, thousands are injured or wounded, in a society where the medical system has collapsed due to war.

Crisis and hardship in Greece

Meanwhile in Greece, every day hundreds of people are forced to embark on dangerous boat journeys from Turkey to the European shores of Greece to seek safety and asylum. This means thousands of women, children, men, babies, elderly and disabled people face death, border violence and exploitation. If they make it to the Greek Islands or the mainland they face torturous refugee camp conditions, forced to live in tents, containers or face homelessness. People who are refugees in Greece struggle due to a lack of food, water, shelter, medical support, clothing and heating.

Dates and nutrition

During the period of Ramadan, when fasting lasts from sunrise to sunset, the body can develop mild health problems such as headaches, low blood sugar, and lethargy. These symptoms are also common among displaced people and those living in refugee camps where food is not readily available. Dates, the food Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) ate when he broke his fast, are an excellent source of fibre, sugar, magnesium, potassium, and have carbohydrates which will aid the body in maintaining health. As well as dates during Ramadan, RBB aims to provide other nutrient dense, culturally appropriate, sustaining and community chosen food items.

We need your help!

Ramadan is upon us, and it is critical that with your support, we are able to raise enough funds to buy food products and dates so our brothers and sisters who are fasting, and also those who are not, can sustain themselves a little more, now and ongoing. Your donation will go towards providing food security, hygiene products and other emergency relief for families with children and individuals forced to flee their home countries.
